Resin brake pads are quieter than metal pads, but offer slightly lower performance and have higher wear. Metal pads have a longer service life than pads made of synthetic resin, are more fade-resistant, and offer consistent deceleration in dry and wet conditions. Metal brake pads may generate noise during braking.
Fading of the brake affects braking performance during prolonged continuous operation. Shimano has introduced brake discs and pads with Ice-Tech to create a cooling technology for consistently high braking performance.
The brake disc rotor features a three-layer sandwich structure of stainless steel outside around a core of aluminum. It radiates heat better and reduces surface temperature. The brake pads, meanwhile, have aluminum cooling fins that further optimize the radiation properties. The design of the disc in conjunction with the cooling fins results in a longer durability of the pad, less brake noise, less fading and a also reduces the weight.
